How I Feed My Dogs

Graham, age 8

I feed roughly 1/3 protein, 1/3 grain and 1/3 veggies - two meals daily.

Protein might be meat, canned fish, eggs, yogurt, ricotta, buttermilk, cottage cheese

Grain is often rice but sometimes potatoes, oats or biscuits (referring to baked goods - not treats!)

Veggies might be cooked or raw (minced) - green beans, broccoli, sweet potatoes, carrots, greens, and occasionally fruits like applesauce, canned pumpkin, berries, avocadoes

I add oil (fish oil capsules or olive, safflower, or canola oil) and Calcium (dried, ground eggshells usually) to the food before feeding. Other tidbits I might toss in on occasion: coconut, ground nuts/seeds, kitchen sink

Generally I try to give a non-meat protein with breakfast and meat protein with dinner.

For teeth cleaning and recreational chewing, I give raw meaty bones (such as beef necks) when I can and whole raw carrots are always popular.

For treats, I bake goodies (see some recipes here). When I run out, I give stuff that's gone stale from the cupboards (crackers, corn chips, cereal), fruit/veggie pieces (apples, bananas, carrots) or miscellaneous "table scraps" (those words that the pet food corporations tell you are evil!)
