Why is change so difficult? Our local high-kill shelter is operated by the New Braunfels Humane Society that has contracts with the city of New Braunfels, Texas, and the county (Comal). For decades they have kept at least 50% of the pets at the shelter hidden from the public and not even posted online. They don’t even post all the pets available for adoption online. They secretly kill dogs and cats without giving public notice. They won’t release any information about their policies or the pets at the shelter. The New Braunfels Humane Society has ignored offers of help. It’s very sad that they continue to refuse to change how they operate. Many citizens want change, but the New Braunfels Humane Society remains entrenched in secrecy. It’s just common sense that you have to SEE pets to be able to SAVE them.
You may have to up your tactics. It’s very hard to change people’s minds, as they get wired a certain way. Cognitive therapy helps those who want to change their thought patterns/habits. Maybe some of its basic tenants can be used to further the cause.

I have read your blog since before you moved to WordPress and have enjoyed your insights and the occasional humor that you interject. You have educated innumerable people on animal issues and particularly the sad state of our shelters in the US. You are a voice that is desperately needed for the animals. It was your blog that inspired me to stand up in front of all the Board of Commissioners and tell them that I thought it was wrong to use the gas chamber at our shelter.
I told you that I was worried I wasn’t being a very effective speaker, because I was so terrified.
You said that too many people wait for things to be perfect before they act, and yes, while someone else might be a better speaker, I was the one who was doing the speaking, so I should just do my best and keep going.
So I did that. And now the gas chamber is gone and our shelter is no longer slaughtering cats wholesale. We’re starting to get a TNR program together. We’re stepping out of the darkness.
Your matter-of-fact support got me through. And helped change things in my county for the better.
