Does anyone know how to get an EIN # for a rescue that says they are “pending” on their 501c3 filing with the IRS?
They had been lying about being a “not-for-profit” with the state as they were running fund raisers and seizing horses from people last summer through an animal control, and under pressure from people publically asking them for their name of rescue and what state filed in, they finally at least registered with the state as a not for profit 2 months after running fund raisers and getting in thousands of dollars of donations on many horses they actually never seized or rescued.
Now they are looking for a new place to move to and running a Go Fund Me fundraiser, and there is a lot of media coverage with their press releases that say all donations are tax deductible, and they are saying they have been “pending” with their IRS 501c3 filing since August 2013 but that is a lie because they didn’t even file with the state until October 2013 for their not-for-profit.
So how can anyone check their status with the IRS on their so-called “pending” 501c3 status if they will NOT give out their EIN #?
The IRS website allows searches without the EIN. Mind, it then returns results organized by EIN so you may have a lot to wade through – I just ran a test using a charity I’m familiar with and wound up with five pages of line entries. But it did work.
I’ve already tried running it by their name and nothing shows up. Someone told me that if they were in “pending” status it wouldn’t show up (and several of the horse rescues in CA say they are “pending” on their 501c3 filing with the IRS, and have been saying that for several years, which it no way takes that long even though it took us 1 year to get our approval letter from the IRS from the time of our filing), but I don’t know if that is true or not.
With their history of lying about filing even for their “not-for-profit” through the state (and they lied publically on FB when asked for the EIN # and said “they had to find it in their paperwork”. So then people said just give us the name you filed under with the state and which state you filed in, and they wouldn’t give that out either. Then the whole post with the comments were taken down, but two weeks after that they finally filed with the state) until 2 months after they collected thousands of dollars for horses to “help” them that they used on their own animals and also on personal items, now that they say they are “pending” with the IRS on a 501c3 but had that on their Facebook page they were “pending” many, many months before they had even bothered to file with the state, I need the info to file complaints and it is difficult to get anyone on the phone at the IRS.
It took over a year for me to get my final approval for 501c3 It can and does take that long. I didn’t do anything or any fund raising waiting for it to go thru even though my attorney sid it was valid from the date I applied.
Here’s a good one: The Humane Society of the New Braunfels Area (a high-kill shelter) in Texas cites “shelter pet theft” as the excuse why they can’t post photos of all the pets at the shelter! That’s why they keep half the pets at the shelter hidden from the public and do not allow public access to them, and then they secretly kill many of them.
The New Braunfels Humane Society has operated the animal shelter for the city of New Braunfels & Comal County TX for 34 years. They claim that people “shop their stray hold areas to look for a pure bred and/or intact dog to breed or fight in order to make a profit.”
Let’s examine that “excuse” that is used by the NB Humane Society to “explain” their need for complete secrecy regarding all the dogs & cats at the New Braunfels/Comal County animal shelter.
First of all, to reclaim an impounded pet, you have to SHOW PROOF OF OWNERSHIP. These days, everyone has a picture of their pet on their phone, if not vet records.
Anyone who spends a lot of money to buy a purebred pet is going to have PROOF OF OWNERSHIP!
As for people trying to obtain animals to use for fighting… Again, to claim an impounded animal, you have to have PROOF OF OWNERSHIP. And they have to PAY DAILY SHELTER BOARDING FEES, they have to PAY FOR A RABIES SHOT, they have to PAY FOR A CITY LICENSE, and they have to PAY ANY CITATIONS FOR HAVING AN ANIMAL AT LARGE, FOR HAVING AN ANIMAL THAT IS NOT VACCINATED, OR NOT REGISTERED, ETC.
There are much easier and cheaper ways for unscrupulous individuals to obtain an animal. NONE of the local open-admission no-kill shelters report any problems with “pet theft” or pet owners not having some proof of ownership.
This shelter does their best to hide the ugly truth from the public–the people who pay their salaries–AND THE KILLING CONTINUES.
I had the pleasure of seeing the film REDEMPTION on Tues (7/16). I was able to talk to Nathan Winograd several times throughout the evening. All I can say is, that if this film makes it way to ANYWHERE NEAR YOU – GO SEE IT!. And after it is shown at several film festivals it will be available on DVD. Everyone should see this film!
With all of the reports you receive on these animal shelters have you compiled a database on them. It would be very interesting to see how many shelters and what kinds of complaints – by state. Just a thought.
Just want to give a two thumbs up to Voiceless-MI and some of their friends. Found a Craigslist post for “someone” to help a Siamese boy who was bleeding from the mouth and is in rough shape. A dear friend forwarded to people who might be able to help and this boy is now safe, will be vetted on Monday, treated for whatever his problems are (thanks to a very generous cat-loving person) and will now have a shot at a long, happy life. Many people just go about quietly doing what they are able to do without any fanfare or publicity, and I hope we can remember there are many of those “quiet rescuers” out there. Lots of times we only hear the horror stories. So, on behalf of one grateful cat boy, thanks to those who have taken him in!
Longshot: I am in need of a replacement cover for an old PVC dog bed I’ve had outdoors for years. The bed measures 27 inches X 51 inches. I can not find any vendors who sell beds (or replacement covers) with those dimensions. Posting here on the off chance that one of you has this same size bed and knows where to buy a replacement cover OR knows someone willing to make a replacement cover for a reasonable price. I hate to throw anything away if it can still be used. Jade is laying on it right now but it’s a sorry sight, lol.
If I was closer I’d offer to make one, but I’m no where close and it’d suck if it didn’t fit. If no one offers you might see if there are any local harness (horse harness) repair (or anyone who makes custom dog harnesses) places that’d make a cover for you if you provided the canvas, you should be able to get heavy weight denim/canvas at your local fabric or upholstery place. Just wash it before you take it in to be made!
Wanderer’s Rest Humane Society in Madison County NY is in desperate need of cat fosters according to their Facebook page. The post states:
“Good morning everyone. Thank you so much for your shares. Our need right now is as urgent as it can be. In addition to the 15 that came in yesterday, 12 more are coming in today that were in a garbage bag thrown from a car. Right now, we have cats in carriers in our dog kennels. We are looking for short term fosters so that we are able to adequately evaluate the cats coming in and have spaces to put them. All of us that do foster can tell you that it is a rewarding experience and that you are truly saving a life. Thank you for sharing.”
You know what would go a long way in helping them get fosters? A public pledge included with the plea that no foster cats will be killed after return and no other shelter cats will be killed to free up cage space when the foster cats return.
Exactly. Asking someone to invest their hearts in fostering only to have the animals they cared for killed (or others to “make space”) for incoming fosters is betrayal in the lowest form.

Nearby Austin, Williamson County, and San Antonio have had great success in implementing the programs and policies of the No Kill Equation.
The first step of the No Kill Equation is to assess how your shelter is doing. I immediately discovered serious issues with transparency at the taxpayer-funded New Braunfels Humane Society. NONE of the national or local experts –including the people who run large, no-kill open–admission shelters, agree with hiding pets from the public.
The secrecy is definitely not in the best interests of citizens or the pets at the shelter, but it does allow the Humane Society to kill with no accountability or outcry from the community because the killing is kept secret. The New Braunfels Humane Society will not release any information about the pets at the shelter or what happens to them, nor will they release financial information, shelter operating policies, or Humane Society governing documents. I have filed complaints with the IRS and the TX Attorney General.
I launched a petition to our City Council to amend the shelter contract to require public access and photos for all animals at the New Braunfels Humane Society. It already has over 1,400 supporters. Please sign & share! New Braunfels TX is a tourist destination so all voices count!
I just saw that this dog at the Columbiana County Dog Pound & Adoption Center in Salem, OH was killed with an adoption pending. This poor boy was found in the trunk of an abandoned car and yet bounced back and was super friendly. On the pound’s website they state ” WE TRY VERY HARD TO PLACE ALL OF OUR ADOPTABLE DOGS IN TO LOVING HOMES OR SEND THEM TO GREAT, APPROVED RESCUE GROUPS…” Unless, of course, there’s a pending adoption.
