  1. I don’t think they look quite like meerkats… I want to say, ‘African ground squirrel…’ (Did I make that up? Who knows what portion of my brain is prompting me now?) I am frequently mistaken… but/and appreciating the humility, & more, the exacerbated desire to (re)learn all these wonderful life facts because of these posts. In other words, this is Fun…!

  2. Not meerkats, not gophers, not woodchucks. I’ m gonna say prairie dogs. They are in abundance in the Catskill mountains (upstate, New York) along with woodchucks, chipmunks, etc. We used to vacation there.

  3. ANSWER TIME

These are round-tailed ground squirrels. From Wiki:

The round-tailed ground squirrel (Xerospermophilus tereticaudus), known as “Ardillón cola redonda” in Spanish, live in the desert of the Southwestern United States and Northwestern Mexico. They are called “ground squirrels” because they burrow in loose soil, often under mesquite trees and creosote bushes.

Good guessing all around. (Coming from someone who doesn’t know any of these animals and would guess ZEBRA every time.)
