Climate Change: An Unnatural Disaster

irma parrots

These parrots, as shown on the ABC News website, appear to be using this Miami high rise hotel window ledge as refuge from Hurricane Irma. I think they are red-headed conures (although I am no expert so please put in your two cents if you think they are another type of bird). Wikipedia has this to say:

The red-masked parakeet (Psittacara erythrogenys is a medium-sized parrot from Ecuador and Peru. It is popular as a pet and are known in aviculture as the cherry-headed conure or the red-headed conure. They are also considered the best talkers of all the conures.

I wish these two would tell someone what has happened since this photo was taken and if they are ok now.

Although red-headed conures are listed as near-threatened by the International Union for Conservation of Nature, there are many other animals who live only in Florida’s wild areas and are at far greater risk. May they all endure.

  1. What a pair of cuties! Poor things are probably confused ans scared , but they do look ok here ! I hope everyone and everythng survives this terrible storm. AND DID YOU READ? IN THE GUARDIAN TODAY, ANIMAL RESCUE TEAMS WERE GOING THROUGH NEIGHBOORHOODS TO LOCATE ANIMALS THAT WERE ABANDONED OR STUPIDLY AND CRUELLY TIED UP. THEY ARE TRYNG TO FIND THEM TEMPORARY REFUGE…BUT HERE IS WHERE IT REALLY GETS GOOD. …..THE ANIMALS ARE CONSIDERED ABANDONED AND WILL NOT BE GIVEN BACK IF THE OWNERS THAT LEFT THEM TRY AND RECLAIM THEM, THEY WILL NOT BE ALLOWED TO ADOPT ANIMALS IN THE FUTURE AND …HERE IS WHERE I JUMPED FOR JOY….THEY ARE TAGGING ALL THE ANIMALS THEY FIND ON PROPERTIES WITH THEIR ADDRESSES BECAUSE THEY SAID THEY WOULD ****MOST LIKELY**** PERSUE CRIMINAL ANIMAL CRUELTY CHARGES AGAINST PEOPLE THEY FIND WHO DID IT !!!!! THIS IS GREAT NEWS .

But I think what they really should do is we should get a team from another state because Floridians are very busy right now, and this team should do this work now… find those people who tied the animals up and abandon them ….and tie these cruel, heartless or just stupid, or both moronic imbecills to the same trees and the same backyards and make them wait out the rest of the storm just as they did the animals.

  2. This is a comment posted on the WPLG Local 10 Facebook page, “These birds are Pedro and Paco who routinely hang out around the 23rd floor where there is an opening into the bldg and they are now inside.” I hope this is true.

The posts are referring to them as cherry-headed conures also known as red-headed conures, so you are correct.

    1. Someone posted a comment on facebook saying hotel staff know the birds, lured them to the roof and then took them inside, but I haven’t found another source to confirm that. I hope it’s true!
