The Memphis Animal Services website provides photos for most of the listed adoptables but scant descriptions, usually just a couple words such as “heartworm positive” if anything at all. So there’s no way of knowing if the pets in the photos are connected with cruelty cases or what their history may be. And since the city refuses to provide medical records on animals, there’s no reliable way to obtain that information.
In looking at the dogs posted with photos on the city’s website today, several appear to be either bloody or starving:
If you are looking for a cat, they have those too. I think.
Memphis Animal Services has a history of starving dogs to death and abusing animals. They should stop hiding animal medical records from the public. And they need to do way better on their website listings.
I understand taking intake images for internal record keeping. It is irresponsible to have those same images populated to the city’s website with no further explanation or posted on social media with no explanation. Transparency is key. It is separate from marketing which is vital to placing animals. It does beg the question of what is happening at MAS which is not part of the HASS – Human Animal Support Services – shelter model. This is not behavior to be followed and will only serve to alienate the public because of the way the images are being handled.
I’m with Shirley. Make medical records for animals available and find a better way to handle images which engages the public and which does not anger or alienate the public.
I understand needing a quick intake photo to hopefully reunite owners with pets.
But to leave not one word on why a dog is covered in blood is… well, at best it’s bad PR. And I would think that their shelter director would be aware of that. Especially since she’s already under fire for other concerns.
The first dog with the bloody mouth makes me think that those are injuries resulting from being catch poled and the dog attacking the pole. Which… could just be a dog who has never been restrained before panicking and injuring himself. But given MAS’s appalling history, one can’t help but think darker thoughts about other possibilities.

To be clear Donna, it is not known what happened to these dogs and the shelter won’t provide the records to the public as required by law so there is no way to find out.
It’s going to take a lot of pissed off people in Memphis that pay taxes that support this death camp. I’ve read several recent articles on the continuing failures of this “shelter “. I don’t understand why there isn’t massive local outrage.

And is that cat photo an intake image or a marketing image? Because either way, it fails miserably. And makes me think that no one is cleaning cages, as well.
