In addition to transporting this pomeranian from England to the U.S. in 1914, the Lusitania was famously sunk by a German U-boat the following year off the coast of Ireland. Of the one thousand nine hundred sixty two passengers and crew members, nearly twelve hundred were lost including one hundred twenty eight Americans. And while the sinking did not draw the U.S. into World War I, it fueled anti-German and pro-war sentiments, brought about heated debates among politicians and ultimately led to the resignation of the Secretary of State, William Jennings Bryan.
