In the August 1912 issue of the English magazine Country-Side, an article about cockers featured this dog and gave a brief description of him:
The same article makes reference to a “recent” change implemented by The Kennel Club requiring show champions to earn a certificate of merit at a field trial in order to be considered a “full” champion.
I went to The Kennel Club’s website to see if/when this requirement was changed but was unable to get a definitive answer. If anyone is able to answer whether the certificate of merit is still required for champion gundogs, please leave a comment.
