Born on This Day: Bette Davis

Actress, icon and dog lover Bette Davis was born on April 5, 1908, in Lowell, Massachusetts.

As lifetime president of the Tailwaggers Society, a canine care and advocacy organization in southern California, she hosted a fundraising event in 1938. Numerous Hollywood stars attended and the fundraiser was well covered by the press.

This puppy was raffled, a common fundraising practice around the turn of the century, at the Tailwaggers Society event.

In September 1941, Bette Davis brought a Scottie named Willie, who belonged to a friend, to the set of the movie The Man Who Came to Dinner. Willie bit her on the nose severely enough to shut down production for several weeks while she recovered.
