Queen Victoria’s Dogs in 1897

The year 1897 marked Queen Victoria’s Diamond Jubilee, celebrating sixty years as England’s monarch. In the February 20 issue of Country Life Illustrated, the queen’s dogs received their own tribute, snippets of which follow. Included are collies, Pomeranians, a Skye terrier and Italian mountaineer dogs – a type of sheepdog.

  1. Queen Victoria was a noted dog lover, surprised they did not mention her beloved spaniel Dash, from her younger days. Interesting how different the dogs look from modern examples of their breed. I think the writer of the article wrongly identified Snowball as a collie. From his look and description, Snowball was one of the “Italian mountain dogs”. Those were probably Maremma sheep dogs, or even Great Pyrenees. Most are all white, but can have pale coloured ears or even the odd spot.

    1. Snowball was definitely a collie, the author notes some dogs from his pedigree including Charlemagne, a famous collie of the era. There was quite an array of types within the breed then, including whites. I rather like the look of the other two.
