The 42nd Westminster Kennel Club Show

In March 1918, the annual show of the Westminster Kennel Club was held at Madison Square Garden in New York City. Numerous competitors, including some of the best in show contenders, are pictured in this post. Except where noted, all photos and text images are sourced from the April 1918 Vanity Fair article cited at the end.

The dramatic judging decisions that determined the winner of the show’s top prize are described below.

A few of the dogs mentioned in the text as if they were in competition at the show are pictured below. I have included them separately as it’s unclear to me whether they were actually in attendance since Brentwood Hero, a multiple best in show winner, including the 1914 Westminster show, is referenced in The Dog Fancier magazine as having died in 1914. Also awards were different then, which can lead to confusion, and names of dogs were sometimes partially incorrect (a challenge in all eras).
