The public looks to it’s city mayors to address city issues, including the treatment and care of the community’s pets at the local shelter. When dogs were found to have been neglected and mistreated at the pound in New Brockton AL, a charge of animal cruelty was brought against the mayor. Yesterday, a jury found that mayor guilty.
New Brockton’s ACO, Tony Bludsworth was also charged in connection with the case. He testified at Mayor Lenwood Herron’s trial:
Bludsworth’s testimony in Herron’s trial showed Herron was his direct supervisor and Bludsworth took orders from him. In the testimony, Bludsworth also stated that he felt his job was in jeopardy from remarks made by Herron and “there ain’t but one way in the town of New Brockton and that’s the mayor’s way.”
And the mayor’s way leads to jail. I hope. Sentencing in the case has not been scheduled yet but the charge carries a sentence of up to one year in jail with fines up to $6,000.
To every mayor in this country who is making excuses and enabling the mistreatment and suffering of pets at your city pound: Take heed.
