Time for a little break. There are actually 2 animals in this photo so I’m going to go ahead and give you a hint: One is a lion. Same rule as always – no researching. The story I read that went along with the photo said the lion was attempting to eat the other animal but ultimately did not. Of course we can’t rule out for certain that she wasn’t playing with the other animal. I mean, who knows what lions think is fun?

I was more interested in finding out if my first guess existed in Africa, in case the photo from there, so I cheated and researched. I won’t give the name of the species that lives in Africa and might be the potential prey/playmate of the lion, but their description makes me think they weren’t playing —
**** are able to roll themselves into a ball to defend themselves, and it takes considerable force to unroll them. The cutting action of their armor-plated scales, worked by powerful muscles, protect them too, by inflicting serious wounds on anything inserted between them. **** also have anal scent glands that emit strong, foul smelling secretions. — Sounds like it could hurt and stink to play with these.
Daniela – I like your response to the request “Name that Animal”, and think Oscar is great for the lion, but if the horny balled shy animal is the one that has foul anal secretions – it might be “gilding the lily” to call her Lily.

I knew “lion” — so no fair taking away the easy answer. The other looks like an armadillo, but armadillo’s aren’t that tough (as evidence by them littering the sides of roadways in Southern Missouri — they are both slow and not tough enough to be so slow if they’re lion prey). But going with Armadillo, just because I don’t know what else it could be and now realize I need to spend more time remember animal names when I go to the zoo.
