  1. Some Thoughts On the Origins Of Animal Cruelty or Lessons Not Learned, From The Flood To Factory Farms Was the intention for humans to have total dominion or to be caring stewards with responsibility and compassion? To this day it all depends on what reading of Genesis you prefer or which to emphasize; reminds me of the TV game show “Let’s Make A Deal” when contestants had to choose which door to open: Gen.1: “Let us make man in our image, after our likeness.” OR Gen.2: “The Lord God formed man from the dust of the earth.” Biblical scholars acknowledge that the writers of the Creation account could be very anthropomorphic , not to mention that they must have been in a state of quandary over whether humans were the pinnacle of creation or deserved to be; Christian apologists, among others, conveniently pick and choose Biblical quotations to suit their anthropocentric interpretations which invariably argue that only man has a soul and deserves eternal life; and yet the term “soul”-NEPHESH- is used for both people and animals because both are conscious beings; they both share the same animating principle or LIFE-BREATH. “They came to Noah into the ark, two each of all flesh in which there was BREATH OF LIFE.” Animals possess the same SPIRIT-RUACH- of life given to human beings! “For in respect of the fate of man and the fate of the animals, they have one and the same fate: as one dies so does the other, and both have the same LIFE-BREATH; man has no superiority over animal, since both amount to nothing. Both go to the same place, both came from dust and both return to dust. Who knows if a man’s life-breath does rise upward and if an animal’s breath doth sink down into the earth?”(ECCLES. 3:19-21).

  2. Some Thoughts(CONT”d)..In John’s vision of heaven God is on a throne and Jesus stands nearby in the form of a lamb; there are plenty of angels and human beings present but so are the animals. Here is John’s testimony: “The I heard EVERY CREATURE in heaven and on earth and under the earth and in the sea, everything in the universe cry out: “To the one who sits on the throne and to the Lamb be blessing and honor, glory and might, forever and ever.” (Revelation 5:13).And even St Paul to the Romans (8:19): “For creation awaits with eager longing for the revelation.” Paul does not say humankind but CREATION which harks back to Genesis and the Garden of Eden which, of course, included the animals. And elsewhere such as in the Tanakh, humanity is presented not as the owner of nature but as its steward, strictly accountable to its true OWNER; and that same human being is NOT an amalgam of perishable body and immortal soul, but a psychophysical .UNITY who depends on God for life itself.

  3. Some Thoughts(part 3)….just a little more….So much for that UNITY after the “original sin” of disobedience and the hubris that accompanied FREE WILL which fell for the “you will be like God”(Gen. 3:5) option of the story-that kind of knowledge and loss of innocence we could have well done without! It was only left for Greek philosophy to maintain the dichotomy of soul and body, of two opposing substances rather than the UNITY that was God-centered….read Platonic DUALISM. An then with the Logos, Language, and Rational Thought thrown into the mix, mankind was on its way to believing it really was the measure of all things-one of the greatest self-delusional lies ever perpetrated in the history of philosophy and for which animals suffer to this day; So we can continue to pick and choose as suits selfish human purposes but we would be hard-pressed to deny the fact that there is much we have not learned with so much of today’s regressive thinking still rooted in Cartesian mindsets and human arrogance; And those of us who dare look into the eyes of our fellow creatures already know that they do RESPOND…and if they could answer in our own ‘language” or “speech” what would they have to say to us other than “Why are you taking so long to become what you were destined to be- the truly spiritual and soulful beings which we animals have always been- and how many more of our innocent lives must be sacrificed in expiation for YOUR SINS!?”

  4. Considering that red-eared sliders (the type of turtle in the fishbowl) are not allowed to be sold at that size, I wonder if this was a wild-caught one. The person selling it seems like a real prize.

  5. For 10 years, a goat named Mr. G & a burro named Jellybean lived together in neglect. After they were rescued, they were sent to different sanctuaries — where the goat spent his days lying in a corner, refusing to eat. As a result, a volunteer offered to make the 14-hour round-trip journey to reunite the two. This is when the magic of unbreakable friendship takes over.

    1. Now you did it – we certainly can learn a lot about the animals. God bless the person who made the reunion possible and God bless those who were willing to take Jellybean in. The change in Mr G was simply amazing. Thank you for sharing this special love story (she writes through tears).

  6. No Kill New Braunfels is working to reform our local high-kill shelter in New Braunfels, Texas (between San Antonio & Austin). Please sign our petition for all the pets at the shelter to be listed online and for public access to all them! About half the pets at the shelter are hidden from the public, not even posted online, and many are secretly killed. New Braunfels is a tourist town, so please help convince our local officials to take action. Thank you!
