Where I’ve Been

Sorry for missing last week’s post but my world was upended due to [dramatic music] Unexpected Kitten.

No one expects the Unexpected Kitten

A mama cat had a litter of three on the property (opposite side of the fence from the dog area) and they seemed to be doing well. I was checking on them and giving them fresh water daily. I made some inquiries about getting all four TNRd.

But then the kittens started getting picked off by predators one by one and apparently the mama got scared off. The likely imminent loss of the last kitten, the bravest of the bunch, was more than I could take so I made one of my signature bad decisions and brought her into the house with the resident Crazy Dogs.

Since then, it’s been all kitten wrangling, all day and all night. I’m getting little sleep, missing showers, forgetting my meds and can reliably be found on the laundry room floor playing with catnip mice at 2 a.m.

She self-soothes a lot at night by faux nursing on the furry dog bed.

Thanks pretty much exclusively to the support of cat rescuer and reader Casey, the kitten is actually doing pretty well. She (or he?) is very affectionate, smart and endearing. I haven’t had any responses from local rescues but I know it’s kitten season which is always challenging. I’m hoping to find a loving home (sans pack of Crazy Dogs) for her ASAP. I will keep you posted.

  1. Thank you for rescuing her/him. I hope the momma cat can be found and TNR’d. I know all about those sleepless days and nights, the world revolves around little neonate kittens, doesn’t it? Thank you, Casey, for assisting in this feline endeavor!

    1. Feed me, change my litter box, play with me, feed me more, change my litter box again, play with me more – and that only covers 1am to 1:30am! Yes without Casey’s help, I’d probably still be looking at a kitten buried under torn papers at the back of a carrier.

      1. Kittens are very demanding, but that stage passes too quickly, when you have time (haha) to reflect back on it, someday.
