A 13 year old girl was left at home in Glendora, CA with her brothers, ages 10 and 1, and two dogs, described as Pitbulls. Neighbors called police this week when they heard the girl screaming in the middle of the night. She had apparently been bitten by one of the dogs.
When police entered the home, the dogs approached them and an officer shot one of the dogs in the head. The injured dog fled and the officer chased him in his police vehicle, running him over then standing by the dog’s body as he eventually died.
The article states:
Monrovia Animal Control provided the aid to Glendora Police as part of a mutual aid service call, police said, when no other agency was available in time.
It is unclear to me from the story what aid the ACOs provided here. Certainly a trained animal handler’s skills could have been used in this situation. Or at least someone whose dog handling techniques rise above “shoot in head, run over with car”.
It is unknown which dog actually bit the girl. Her injuries were not life threatening.

I’m beginning to think that shooting dogs is part of the police training. Of course the dogs approached the police, they were invading their territory. Shoot in the head and then run over with car, really?
Children left home alone again. And sounds like the poor 13 year old has limited coping skills to begin with, yet she’s left in charge of another child, an infant and multiple dogs. Mix in cops who absolutely cannot read a dog’s body language and have no idea what to do (told the dogs to back up? really?) as well as guns and no compunction about running an injured dog over with the car (some people say that he did it twice) and you’ve got an unfolding show of horrors.
All of this could have been short circuited with good parenting. Unfortunately, the dog and the kid pay the price.
Really? 13 is too young? WITH two great guard dogs? I babysat at 13 for my siblings and neighbors. Wished I had had a BIG DOG to protect me and chase away the things that go bump in the night.
Cops, tho, with NO training. Yet there was AC there? Now THAT’s ineptitude at the highest level!!!!!!!! GAD!!!!!

Thirteen with poor coping skills is indeed too young, yes. While you and I might have handled the situation at thirteen, this poor child’s response to whatever happened was to scream and scream and scream. Clearly she’s not capable of babysitting an infant and her little brother and multiple dogs. This child should not be watching herself, let alone others.

No, it definitely is unclear in truth. And I may add most 13 year old girls, especially nowadays, are drama queens who scream at everything (I know, I had a couple of daughters myself) and it is a very valid possibly the girl was lying to get out of trouble after the nosey neighbors called the cops instead of investigating the screaming themselves… No mention if there was actual evidence of a dog bite like fang marks on the girl and/or broken skin.
So another case of Pitbull Hysteria where a good dog was killed and abused while dying. And such is the mentality of cops today, shoot first and investgate later… The cop did not handle this with “innocent until proven guilty”, but, sadly, in the case of pitbulls or pitbull look-a-likes, they are being unjustly found guilty no matter what the case… This demented mentality must be put to a STOP soon or once a victory to kill off all pitbulls should occur, then authorities will set their sights on other large dog breeds once held as dangerous like the German Shepherd, the Rottie, the Doberman and so on…

FYI the Alaska State Troopers saved a sweet little dog from being beat when neighbors heard the dog in distressed and dialed 911.
Animal Control was unavailable, but the troopers saved the dog and turned it over for Protective Custody and the paper wrote a lovely story about the happy reunion when the owner got back into town to claim his pet.
