This is Reno. I found him with a brindle female in New Orleans over a month ago. As I had recently kept a dog that had followed me home my husband would not let either stay for any amount of time so I had no choice but to bring him to the shelter. My sister came and picked him up from me so I could get to work and brought them to a shelter for the wrong parish (Jefferson instead of Orleans). I called to make sure they had my information in case no one claimed them and called back 5 days later to check up on them and find out their status. At this time, I was told the dogs were adopted together. I was ecstatic and stopped looking for anything for them because they were safe.
Three days later, I received a call from the shelter director asking if I was coming to pick the dogs back up as they were now in danger of being euthanized. I began frantically making pleas on Facebook to find them a foster. I was then told I could pick them up and bring them to the Orleans Parish shelter, the LASPCA, where they should have gone in the beginning so I immediately went to do this. This was able to buy them 5 more days. I was also told that they would be ok there since a transport was going to take a bunch of dogs up north to be adopted so none would have to be euthanized. Sadly, Superstorm Sandy hit and the transport was cancelled putting these two in immediate danger.
No one was offering to take in either dog so as a last resort I sent a message to a woman who had so amazingly taken in a lab mix and her 7 puppies several months ago. At first she told me she couldn’t but upon finding out they were scheduled to be euthanized in less than 48 hours she stepped up and offered to take them. Lucky for her, one other person stepped up and took the female into foster so she only had to take the male, who was now named Reno.
Animal Rescue New Orleans couldn’t see anything happen to these sweet souls after seeing their faces everywhere they turned so they became ARNO dogs. Reno is not in danger of being euthanized now; however, he is in desperate need of a new foster or adoptive home. We really need a foster so we don’t lose one of the great ones who is willing to step up when a situation arises.
He is sweet and shy. He is approximately 50-60 pounds, neutered and I believe he is heartworm negative. He is good with big and little dogs. His foster mom said she believes he was never in a house before as he was unsure of how to go up the steps to her house and was very grateful for his first milkbone. Awww! He is so cute. Wish I could play with him and take him home, but I cant. Hope he finds a good home!!
Thank you for posting this. :) he is so sweet. All we can do now is share him so his new family sees him. I would take him in myself but my husband draws the line at our 3. I think he is scared I would be a foster failure again.
