The Halifax Co pound in NC is a catch and kill facility that is not open to the public for adoptions. A well intentioned but obviously misinformed pet advocate recently wrote to the county in an attempt to get them to open their doors to adopters:
A recent email from N.C. Advocate Jane Tzilvelis, of N.C. Abandoned and Homeless State Pets, threatened the county with consequences from the Humane Society of the United States.
“Perhaps, after the HSUS puts your shelter on the map to the public, you will consider allowing North Carolina taxpayers entrance into the Halifax County Animal Shelter,” she said in the email. “I heard you are the next shelter project on the HSUS list.”
I commend the effort to hold the county accountable for its failures on behalf of the community pets in Halifax Co but let’s be clear: HSUS has never brought meaningful reform to any animal shelter anywhere. HSUS has created zero no kill communities. If “HSUS puts your shelter on the map to the public” it will likely be to give the pet killing facility an award or to chastise locals for not bringing the staff enough cupcakes.
[Halifax County Manager Tony] Brown said the Halifax County Animal Shelter is compliant with all state laws[.]
It’s an interesting use of the word “compliant” and a novel one. In the state of NC, the law requires municipal shelters to be open to the public and to make unclaimed pets available for adoption. Halifax Co does neither. Which probably makes HSUS love them even more.
I hope people keep advocating for the Halifax Co pound to start doing its job. But don’t count on any help from HSUS. They are killing apologists and enablers who use their millions bilked from unsuspecting donors to whitewash the reputation of dog torturer Michael Vick and fake-rescue pets for the cameras.
If there were awards for titles of posts, this would win a big blue rosette.

HSUS. What can you say about them? I feel badly for all the people who are in the organization because they wanted to be a force for good. I feel badly for all the donors who have been deceived by them. I feel worst of all for all the animals in shelters that they continue to advocate AGAINST.
That photo always makes my blood run cold. Look at the body language, WP is guarded in the front but his leg is crossed over towards MV, in almost an intimate closeness.
Please strongly consider retracting your statement about Jane Tzilvelis. Yes Biscuit made an assumption about my email statement to Halifax County without contacting me to further understand the context of my statement.

Clearly Yes Biscuit and friends, I never threatened Halifax officials, am not a member or volunteer of the HSUS. Read Ethics in Journalism.

This is a disgrace what you wrote.
Why not interview me, call me, ask me what I meant in the email I sent Halifax officials and the Daily Herald? Instead you made an serious assumption that I am threatening Halifax County officials.
I consider this a defamation my good character. I have no interest in threatening anyone. Have you lost your mind?

I quoted that from the linked article, as per standard blog protocol. If you don’t like it, you should consider contacting the person at The Daily Herald who wrote it.
At any rate, I am grateful to you for advocating for the pets in Halifax Co. Please keep it up.
But don’t count on HSUS to lift a finger to help you. Rally your local people, engage your community. That’s how change will happen.
It is important to understand the context of a paragraph. I feel it is vital to talk with people to fully understand an email comment. Emails are flat and non dimensional. And I thank you, too, for working so hard to help homeless pets. In gratitude.
I have contacted the Daily Herald managing editor a few days ago to further clarify the context of my paragraph.
Sadly, I have heard this from several people who wanted to do right by the shelter animals. I then have to show them how the HSUS has actually sided with high-kill shelter directors in defeating Hope’s Law here in Texas. They usually contact HSUS anyway and get a response email asking for donations. I’ve been there too, a long time. It is easy to be deceived.
