June is National Adopt-a-Shelter Cat Month!
What is your local shelter doing to help promote cat adoptions and celebrate cats?
UPAWS will have 50% Off (or more) on all felines for the first 3 weeks and the last 9 days of June we will be doing or second annual ‘9 Lives for 9 Dollars’ adoption event – where a person will be able to adopt any of our cats ages 9 months and older for just $9.
This is in conjunction with our other programs such as our Lonely Heart Club (pets that have waited 60 + days for a home) are free paid for by a local business. And our new program is “Aged to Purr-fection” where any person 60 years or older can adopt a cat 8 years or older for free and get all the initial supplies like a bag of food, litter, box, dishes etc. to get them started for free.

Mine is doing nothing except the usual – kill most everything they can. But since mine is doing nothing, may I support an adoption in your community by donating toward an adoption fee for one of your kitties? How do I do that?

I just donated to the general fund but if possible, I’d like my small contribution to help with Grizabella’s adoption fee. I picked her because I was moved by her story. And because she looks like my kind of cat. Oh and because GRIZABELLA, obviously.

That was so kind of you to help Grizabella. There were 23 of the cats – all so scared, so terrified. Kind Volunteers helped live trap them and they are slowly coming along. But 4 have been adopted so far : )
Just an idea, but how about a day of good animal news? Sometimes the bad stuff is overwhelming and, honestly, depressing?
I just read about the police officer in Portland, Oregon who stopped a high speed chase to make sure a mama duck and her ducklings got safely across the road. Made my day!
Send ’em if ya got ’em. I would prefer a bunch of stories about shelters that stopped killing and started doing their jobs today but if no one can find any of those, I’ll take the ducklings type stories too.

Not that I’m aware of. I think just the Charlotte Humane Society. I mean, why would CMACC go out of its way to take animals for adoption? That would mean putting forth an effort and (gasp!) working. Nooooo!
Even if they didn’t want to take pets for adoption, they could have an educational booth about community cats and how to help them, or about vaccinations and maybe even hand out vouchers for free shots or they could bring a demo dog to dispel the myths that Pitbulls are all dangerous or DOT DOT DOT. I just don’t know why they would miss an opportunity to meet all these area pet lovers and promote SOMETHING/ANYTHING.

I can’t find a link, but WSMV Channel 4 in Nashville carried a story last night about a stray dog that had puppies under an outbuilding near a daycare (in a home).
A daycare worked decides she wants to “see the puppies” and Mom bites her defending them… They lured the Mom into a trap with the babies and they are tiny; Mama will be put down after her three day stray hold is up if she isn’t claimed…
WTF.
Will they release mom and puppies to a rescue? I surely hope so. What a dumb thing to do to a stray dog with tiny pups . . . duh, of course she bit this person. And she could lose her life because of human stupidity. SMH
I don’t know… I’m not in Nashville, can’t find where they list stray dogs on their web site (shelter has a 78% kill rate, but only has 25 dogs listed on Pet Finder). I’ve contacted a rescue but haven’t heard anything. This story isn’t on WSMV’s site, so it seems this scruffy little stray and her pups will fall through the cracks.

California rescuer Josh Liddy (swaylove.org) filmed author Ken Foster in L.A. during the tour for Ken’s latest book, “I’m a Good Dog: Pit Bulls, America’s Most Beautiful (and Misunderstood) Pet.”
In one of the video segments, posted yesterday, Ken talked about his bizarre experience corresponding with Ingrid Newkirk. I’ve seen Ken speak and this segment is very typical of his warm, funny manner.

Someone asked for some good news. No Kill Colorado got the governor to sign a proclamation making June 11 2013 Just One Day Colorado. It doesn’t make every shelter pet safe that day, but it improves their chances. And if we can do just one day, maybe we can do another. See the proclamation at facebook.com/nokillcolorado

Yes, I submitted my marketing ideas to Best Friends Animals Society and I won the grant to advertise the 9 Lives for $9 event – a local TV station produced it for free and on top of it, then donated double in air time for the ad! So I got a 2 for 1 air time and also 20,000 impressions on their website pointing to our website : )
