Fulton Co In Their Own Words

Welcome to Fulton Co where they kill more than 1/3 of the animals in their care and post “urgent” animals on Facebook. But do not call them!  Because whoa – it’s not THAT urgent.

In late October, the Fulton Co rescue coordinator took to Facebook to shame the public for asking the pound to do the job taxpayers are paying it to do and help stray pets:

  1. And this is why I say that kill shelters are bad for people.

These people are so…mentally disturbed that they don’t even realize what it is they’re saying. Whee, an extra day before we kill is a success! Vote for which dog gets to survive the week! Sick puppies aren’t our job – you need to try harder and stop calling us!

And then to “market” their animals on chokepoles and the one-handed chest clutch as if it’s somehow doing good work…

This culture of killing results in mental derangement where you end up with exactly this.

I look forward to the day when a class action lawsuit is brought against a shelter for psychological harm inflicted upon the employees by regressive shelter policies. Clearly the people of Fulton County have a case right now as they are in obvious and desperate need of mental health care. Kill shelters turn people into monsters.

  2. 1. The shelter is open 7 days a week and until 7pm during the week, they state multiple times that email is accessible to them 24 hours a day. If the deadline they post is 10am and the shelter opens at 11am, would it not make sense to email?? Or does that make too much sense.
    2. All the volunteers and the person that post was about know it was about one specific person who took a stray animal from the person who found it and kept it at her house knowing it had parvo before then turning it into animal control. Sending photos of the diarhhea to other animal advocates, who told her to keep it and they would help her with treatment, but she doesn’t own any dogs and doesn’t want to. She delayed the treatment of that animal, while the STAFF is the one that took that puppy. The individual has turned in over 100 animals, do an open records request.
    3. Every post is about transparency on the reform page where this page gets information for this post. I am sure the staff pick their office dogs from who needs it, and left the choice they make all the time, once, to the public. Maybe it offended some, but it is the truth.
4.A post saying they are not euthanizing for over a week, cancelling their euthanasia day and you complain about that. They also gave more time to share urgent animals. In the past it was disorganized and more last minute. They try to give more time to get the word out and you all still complain.
    5. Usually only bite dogs are on a catch pole, or extremely scared or aggressive. If they allow a staff member to get bit then how much harder is it to get the dog out? They get the animals photos online immediately, would it be better to wait until the animal has decompressed, get them into good lighting then post. Most of the photos are replaced with new photos. If you hate it go help. Getting new photos is an important task, imagine how much any of you could help if you volunteered. Go look at their website and pages, there is an OBVIOUS effort to get new photos.

If you are local go to the shelter and volunteer.
If you aren’t you can still share the animals

The person this information comes from worked at the shelter, and was not good at her job. Go look up her mugshot, and multiple lawsuits, she is not credible. She doesn’t have any dogs, and her cats are all outdoors. she is a horrible pet owner, but you trust her? Look at the pages when she worked there last year, she was much worse at social media than they are now. She posted a dog after it was dead, because she was so out of touch and didn’t actually pay attention to the animals. http://www.facebook.com/truthaboutreformfulton if you want to know the TRUTH.

    1. That’s great that the shelter has access to email 24 hours a day. Has it occurred to you that not everyone who might be interested in adopting or rescuing these urgent animals has email access 24 hours a day? Furthermore, sometimes it can be quicker and easier to exchange information over the phone.

Nobody is saying that staff members should be allowed to get bitten. And yes, they should get found animals up on the site ASAP and then worry about getting decent pictures when the stray hold is up. But once the animal is available for adoption, there should at least be a photo without a choke pole. If it’s still impossible to control the animal without the aid of a choke pole, then that animal is not ready to be up for adoption. Or are you claiming that it’s some kind of hardship to get a snapshot and upload it, despite the fact that – according to your own statement – staff has computer access 24 hours a day?

      1. If they are on facebook they have email. They have an option to go to the shelter in person, call or email. There are 2 facebook pages, one made for the community and adopters the urgent page shown is only urgent dogs for foster or rescues. Sometimes adopters see those posts and find a match. However, at 11pm the night before there is no other way to get in touch with staff. There is no one answering the phone. Why risk a miscommunication by leqving a voicemail when you can get an email answered right away. If they don’t have access they can use their phone to call someone who does. Also if they are on facebook they can message the page!!! I have emailed them at 1am and got a response or 10pm there is no option to call, so whether it is quick on the phone is not even the point. Futhermore a lot of the posts I see on there are people who can’t help and if they spent all the time on the
phone how who they take the beautiful photos that get animals adopted, or do events, or temp test animals, socialize them etc. The page DOES NOT even say that anymore so their really is no point to argue with you, this is not even up to date.
Bite dogs are shown online so owners can find them if not aware. They are not available for adoption they are rescue only if at all. If they are nice volunteers and staff do go back and get more photos of them. Why don’t you go to the website and see how many out of 300+animals are on a catch pole. Staff has access to email 24 hours a day, they aren’t at the shelter to 1. Take the photo or 2. Upload the photo. Why don’t you actually go thwir in person or visit their pages talk to real volunteers before you judge. More animals have good photos then don’t. This blog doesn’t post the good photos it doesn’t even post how to adopt them. Talk about a waste of time.

      2. “If they are on facebook they have email.” Ok, yeah, you’re not getting this. Some people have online access but do not have email access 24/7. Some people may have phones, even phones with data plans, but not unlimited data plans. Or there may be areas where the phone functions as a phone but doesn’t get internet access or gets spotty internet access. If you seriously cannot conceive of a possible scenario where a person may be aware of an animal on facebook but not have the ability to immediately email then I don’t even know what’s wrong with you.

Your blather about emailing at 10pm therefore “whether it’s quick on the phone isn’t the point” makes no sense. I’m talking about the back and forth exchange of information needed to arrange for the rescue of an animal from this hellhole. The actual exchange of information is faster in real time. I’m not saying they need to be available by phone 24/7, but they should be during the time that they’re there killing animals.

That mama dog on the chokepole is clearly available for adoption. No animal should ever be shown for adoption on a chokepole. It takes less than a minute to snap a new photo – it doesn’t have to be perfect, just not on a chokepole or otherwise being manhandled.

  3. Sarahjaneb Let me explain it in a way your narrow mind can understand. They CAN CALL and do. The “Do not call the shelter” was up previously when the animals were posted the night before euthanasia, so they could not call, no one would be able to answer. Posted with only next day notice so 7pm- 10am they are closed. Thankfully they are posting dogs with days in advance, they took that off and it is no longer the case. You are arguing for something that makes no sense and is old news. If you can’t understand that I don’t know how to help you. We already discussed the shelter posts ALL animals as they come in, some of those will be bite cases, cruelty cases, moms with puppies that ARE NOT available for adoption. So how can you say an animal is clearly available for adoption. ALL animals are on the website no matter their status, so their OWNERS can find them. Otherwise they would be able to wait until they had a better photo. You just want to argue and don’t volunteer there so you have NO CLUE what you are talking about. This shelter has cut the euthanasia rate in half in the last six months. Do your research before you just jump on a bandwagon. I am sure you fall for the internet hoaxes all the time.

    1. Chris, all you had to say was that the “do not call” had been removed. You could have said that a while ago. As for the mama dog on the chokepole, if you clicked the link, you would see where it says that she’s available for adoption. A found dog that’s still on stray hold shouldn’t have that on their page. They would show as a different status.

  4. “Chris” is actually a female who volunteers for FCAS on off-sites. “Chris” suffers from cognitive dissonance; Her/His identity is literally tied to FCAS. Ironically Chris claims to a No-kill advocate. The initial post written by “Chris” is full of inaccuracies. For example: the
“ parvo” pup was not held by anyone who knew the puppy was ill. The puppy followed a neighbor home from the park, who responsibility posted his picture in the local neighborhood group and advised if unclaimed he would call FCAS. He had to work the following the day and an a local advocate instead took the pup in and called FCAS. The entire neighborhood has lost faith in FCAS due to constant poor service. “Chris” was involved in the initial advocacy efforts to re-form FCAS but did so anonymously so he/she is still able to volunteer at FCAS and per usual “Chris” continues to hide his true identity. Chris’s actions have been very irresponsible supporting neglect, abuse, as well as leadership failure. It is an awful example for young advocates.

  5. The other nonsense written by Chris Dumas is just that… the shelter employee he/she refers to was very dedicated and uncovered massive corruption hence the new leadership was assigned by Fulton County commissioners. Unfortunately the new vendor (against what they claimed they would do) failed to research fully & chose to keep over 50% of prior staff and has not fully implemented the NKE hence the shelter continues to makes many mistakes costing animals lives to date. Changing the culture at the facility has been very difficult given over half the staff remain. Local advocates remain hopeful and continue to advocate for Fulton animals. The attempted to work internally with new leadership, who refused to implement changes, hence the deficiencies were posted publicly on the Re-form page. Lastly, a comprehensive breakdown of the kill rate has yet to be don. We have received information that FCAS animals are being warehoused and the shelter was overcapacity – which would affect the kill rate. Animal are also being labeled incorrectly and we are ware of animals labeled sick that were not – that would not count toward the kill-rate. It truly is a shame that we connect honestly confront the problems and get the changes the animals need at FCAS. The personal attacks are simple ad hominem and not worthy of reply.

  6. ps. The way “Chris” who name is actually Ashley is acting here is how she treats volunteers when she runs off-sites and new volunteers at the shelter… volunteers get chanced away and the animals LOSE.
