Name That Animal

We haven’t played this for awhile and I miss it.  This is just for fun and the only rule is:  no researching.  Post your best guesses in the comments.  Reading other people’s answers before posting your own is optional.  Answer will be posted in the comments tomorrow.

  1. I know, I know( from your token marine biologist)… it’s a batfish . VERY cool and weird fishes… live down on the bottom, in fairly deep water usually. Once you have seen one you won’t forget it… The only other fish with really really red lips is the treefish (a CA native found in the kelp forest). And, they actually WALK on those pectoral and anal fins. Not too much swimming for this guy…

    thanks for the pic!!!

  2. Adrianne’s got the right of it – it’s a batfish!

Mind, it does bear some resemblance to my father on a bad morning.

  3. ANSWER TIME:

This is a red lipped batfish. From the Wiki page for this animal:

The red-lipped batfish or Galapagos batfish (Ogcocephalus darwini) is a fish of unusual morphology found around the Galapagos Islands at depths of 30m or more. Red-lipped batfish are closely related to rosy-lipped batfish (Ogcocephalus porrectus), which are found near Cocos Island off the coast of Costa Rica. This fish is mainly known for its bright red lips.

Batfish are not good swimmers; they use their highly-adapted pectoral fins to “walk” on the ocean floor.
