The Second Boer War (1899 – 1902) between the British Empire and South Africa resulted in the taking of various “trophies” by British troops. One of these, a blesbok who was captured just three days after being born in the South Transvaal, was pictured in Country Life in February 1903. Incredibly, the young antelope is depicted walking on the deck of an ocean steamer, hanging out with a dog, and later, grazing on the English countryside.
