Memphis Animal Services hasn't posted its numbers since last year. Transparency is important in creating a no kill community and it's a shame that MAS refuses to do its part while blaming the so-called irresponsible public. Obtained via FOIA request, the January 2012 stats from MAS indicate 950 pets taken in, 173 adopted, 21 died … Continue reading MAS: Still Failing on the Transparency Front

Doing It for the Animals
If your shelter or rescue is narrowly focused (e.g. you only adopt out a specific breed), low volume (that is, your breed is not in need of frequent rescue and/or available rescue resources are greater than the need) and the animals have a good quality of life (including daily individual attention and exercise with a … Continue reading Doing It for the Animals

Macomb Co is a suburb of Detroit where about 10% of the population lives below the poverty level. The Macomb Co Animal Shelter in MI has 5 dogs and 6 cats listed on its website - none have photos. Charlotte-Mecklenburg Animal Care & Control in NC hasn't updated its statistics since the end of February 2012. That month, the pound killed 67% of the cats in its care. Here are some of the cats currently shown on Char-Meck's PetHarbor pages.
Novartis Plant Still Shut Down
In January, I posted about the Novartis plant shutdown in Lincoln, NE. I haven't seen anything new come across the wire about this and had assumed everything was back to normal. When I was unable to buy Interceptor (made by Novartis) today due to shortage of product, I began looking around. The Interceptor website doesn't … Continue reading Novartis Plant Still Shut Down
Battered Rescuers, Dead Shelter Pets
I receive tips on a regular basis from caring advocates reporting that their local shelter kills animals needlessly. What motivates the tipster to write is often one of the following: There are empty cages at the shelter but the pets were killed anyway. Rescue was already lined up for the animals and the staff knew … Continue reading Battered Rescuers, Dead Shelter Pets
Name That Cryptid
A little twist on our regular Name That Animal game but the same rule applies - no researching, just post your best guess in the comments for fun. Answer will be posted in the comments later today. A cryptid is an animal whose current existence is unconfirmed by mainstream science. Cryptids may be animals who … Continue reading Name That Cryptid
Owner Finds Dog Covered in Blood at Amarillo Animal Control
On Tuesday, a 3 year old Australian Shepherd named Auston escaped his yard and was picked up by Amarillo Animal Control in Texas. The owner, Cassie Sims, found a note from AC on her door saying her dog had been impounded. She immediately went down to redeem him: When Cassie went to retrieve her four-legged … Continue reading Owner Finds Dog Covered in Blood at Amarillo Animal Control
Open Thread
This post is open for any animal related links, questions, comments, etc. In light of the ongoing pet food recalls, I thought it might be a good time to share what food(s) you are feeding and, if known, the name of the company that manufactures it. If you feed home prepared foods, maybe provide an … Continue reading Open Thread
Solid Gold Tries to Get the Stink of Coverup Off its Greedy Salmonella Hands
Diamond makes some of Solid Gold's foods. As such, I was surprised their website has continually claimed none of the company's foods were affected by the salmonella recall. Today that changed and Solid Gold has finally issued a recall for 2 of its foods. The news is worded such that customers might think Solid Gold … Continue reading Solid Gold Tries to Get the Stink of Coverup Off its Greedy Salmonella Hands
