It’s been about a month since we first learned about the 44 dogs HSUS took from an owner in AL and dispersed throughout the south. I thought it would be a good time to post an updated list on the efforts to track these dogs.
In addition, here are some of the search terms that have brought people to the blog over the past month – in order, from most popular to least:
hsus, alabama 44, alabama 44 dogs, 44 dogs seized alabama, hsus marshall county alabama, hsus sends alabama dogs to north carolina, lincoln county humane society killing, lincoln county nc animal shelter and dogs from alabama, yes biscuit wordpress 2010 tracking dogs rescued hsus, hsus 44 dogs, hsus releasing rescue dogs to kill shelter, hsus hoarder alabama, 44 dogs seized in marshal county alabama, hsus 44 alabama dogs, where did the dogs from the alabama hoarding situation go?
But yeah, I think the HSUS plan of ignore-and-it-will-go-away is working out great.
Here is the list as it stands today:
Status: Located (20 dogs)
10 dogs at PAWS Atlanta in GA, 7 available for adoption and the other 3 to be available soon. Donations appreciated!
2 dogs at Humane Society of Etowah Co, AL: Ben and Jeri – both up for adoption. Donations appreciated!
3 dogs at Bliss Animal Haven in Loganville, GA, 1 already adopted, 2 available for adoption
2 dogs at New Leash on Life in Wilson Co, TN, both have been adopted
3 dogs transferred from Lincoln Co Animal Services in NC to Humane Society of Charlotte. Chow Phat was adopted to a home with 3 Beagles. Chester and Bear Bear are available for adoption. Merry’s 5 pups, born in foster care, will be available for adoption in future. (See below for info on Merry.)
Status: Dead (6 dogs)
4 dogs at Lincoln Co Animal Services in NC – Murray, Harry, Buddy and dog #38805 were put in the gas chamber on 12-13-10.
2 puppies at Humane Society of Etowah Co in AL – The pups were less than 10 weeks old and came in very sick. Parvo was suspected and both were euthanized. They were the youngest of the group of 44 and the only 2 who appeared to be sick.
Status: Lost (3 dogs)
1 dog – Merry – transferred from Lincoln Co Animal Services in NC to Humane Society of Charlotte, escaped from her foster owner. There is an active search underway for her and hopefully she will be found very soon.
2 puppies lost in TN. One escaped from her New Leash on Life foster home in December and hasn’t been found. The posting on the New Leash on Life website for that pup has been replaced with a posting for Sassy, who went missing from her new home this week.
Status: Unknown (15 dogs)
10 dogs dropped at the Nashville Humane Association in TN. None listed on their website. Although I’ve been unsuccessful thus far in learning the status on these 10 dogs, you can rest assured I’ll keep trying.
2 dogs transferred from Lincoln Co Animal Services to Charlotte-Mecklenburg shelter. Their kill rate is about 65%. Both dogs are listed on Char-Meck’s site – Daisy (ID#A797513) and Markus (A797514) but neither is available for adoption. They are designated on the website as “lost pets” and kenneled in “DDTF” – Dangerous Dogs Task Force. I’m not sure what would qualify them as either lost pets or dangerous dogs.
3 dogs remain unaccounted for and I’m still looking for them. HSUS presumably remembers where they dropped them but has declined to say where that was or what the status of the 3 dogs is now.
Anyone with information on the whereabouts of the 3 unaccounted for dogs or the status of any of the “Unknown” dogs, please share. I’d like to know if the dogs are alive and if so, if they are available for adoption.
Just out of curiosity, I wonder what would have happened had HSUS simply asked local rescue groups and the ACO to get involved? And if the HSUS had offered their financial support in lieu of all this snatch-and-grab raiding stuff?
Whatever happened to this person who had these 44 dogs?
Because doing the right things – offering the owner assistance, demonstrating some empathy, and/or helping to rehome some of the animals without dragging away – is not part of the HSUS agenda.
It doesn’t create the sort of PR opportunities that the snatch-and-grab crap does. Ultimately, it’s depressing that so many members of the public swallow the HSUS version of these faux rescues without asking if this was the ideal solution for the animals.
I’d like to know what happened to the person with the 44 dogs, too.
Watched a PBS special called Killer Stress by National Geographic about the studies of baboons in Africa by Robert Sapolsky (Stanford University neurobiologist, MacArthur “genius” grant recipient, -he’s also an author one book “Why Zebras Don’t Get Ulcers: Stress, Disease and Coping.” For 30 years he’s studied baboons to understand stress and in particular how our social standing (where we are in social hierarchies) makes us suseptible to the damaging effects of stress.
My simple breakdown on this and how it relates to HSUS and compassionate animal rescue groups is….HSUS/Animal Control are like the alpha male baboons causing all the turmoil – in Sapolsky’s studies the alpha baboons accidentally ate tainted meat and all died (because they were the greedy ones who got all the meat) – Sapolsky was devastated but then soon discovered the kinder female baboons and less aggressive males (like compassionate animal rescue groups) took over and the community got healthy and thrived.
HSUS/Animal Control are greedy alphas creating misery.
Thank you so much for staying on this subject and keep looking into what is going on with these dogs. I hope your efforts will cause people to begin to look closely into the affairs of animal welfare organizations and make sure they are doing the best they can for the animals.
I live in Tampa fl. I adopted a puppy from Hillsborough County humane society. When I was getting information on the puppy I fell in love with (she was 8 weeks old) I was told that she had a very very sad story. She was rescued from a hoarder with over 40 other dogs. And she was sent to Tampa on 1/24/13. I adopted that day. 1/26/13. Her name at the humane society was donna.. I named her Mercedes. She is a hound mix. I believe either a black and tan coon w/ a little blue tick in her. She is happy and healthy and loves to talk. She stole my heart that very moment in the shelter and I can’t imagine my life without her.
She was sent here from Alabama. Her paperwork did not specify exactly where in alabama.
Rearranging deck chairs on the Titanic. The dogs all get scooted around – they will die in the black of night and HSUS is the band asking for more champagne.
